Friends of Smith Creek Preserve
Welcome to the official website of the Friends of Smith Creek Preserve. We are fans of Smith Creek and lend our energy and support to making it a success. We sponsor events and volunteer to help maintain and protect the preserve for future generations.
The Nature Conservancy in Arkansas created Smith Creek Preserve in Newton County in 2005. The 1,226-acre preserve lies above Sherfield Cave, where the largest colony of Indiana bats in the state hibernates each winter.
Had the Conservancy not acquired the preserve, it probably would have been developed. Smith Creek is home to the largest colony of Indiana bats in Arkansas. They live in 3 miles long Sherfield Cave, now protected by the Conservancy.
The Preserve is home to other animals including, deer, bear, and eagles that spend all or part of their life cycles on the property. Smith Creek is famous for its photogenic cascades and falls. It is also famous for its spring wildflower blooms. Smith Creek offers naturalists and wildlife lovers a unique experience in a pristine environment.
